A retrospective book documenting AIT’s year-long pilot
Art in Transit is a public art initiative run by Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology. It brings together students and practitioners to develop contextual art and design interventions in metro stations and public spaces in the city. It was started in 2014, with a year-long pilot at the then newly constructed Peenya metro station. Students that were part of the project worked on individual site-specific projects and installations in and around the station. Working first as a graduating student and then as a research assistant at AIT, I happened to be in the position to write and design a comprehensive documentation of the pilot.
This book is a in-depth lookback at the various activities, ideas, projects and people that came together to realize the pilot at Peenya Metro Station over the course of 2014-15.
The book was designed not just as a curation of final outputs but of processes behind-the-scenes as well. its pages are interspersed with snippets of conversations, snapshots from students’ sketchbooks and more.
A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the students’ projects – 19 projects in total distributed across the station.
Not only does it document in detail their conceptual thrusts, explorations, processes and final outcomes, it charts the evolution of their creative practice across the project.
The book also documents the foundational and complementary activities that took place across the pilot: orientation exercises, interim mini-courses, artist talks & workshops, pop-up exhibitions and more.
